Busywork

In offices around the land
the busywork is growing
as clients stow their cash away
and cash cows cease their lowing.
Cyberloafing is the norm
because the phone's not ringing;
store clerks take up macrame,
no registers ka-chinging.
People grow more frantic
as there's less real work to do.
They put in extra hours
hoping pink slips they won't view.
The existential anguish
of refiling old receipts,
counting yellow pencils,
and restacking time card sheets,
is worse than unemployment
so sit back and just relax;
when you get unhired
you are through with paying tax.
