The Golden Years

Retiring too early is an injudicious way

to start that long descent into eventual decay.

Keep your spirits up, my friend, by working ev'ry day,

Even though your knees are shot and muscles turn to clay.

Anyone who quits the race before their hair is whited

Only serves to get the younger people too excited.

If you sit around all day you'll sure feel uninvited,

And may face stiff penalties – and prob'ly be indicted!

Idle hands and idle minds; the devil's tools indeed –

Dying with your boots on is a patriotic creed.

Besides which you'll be giving in to fantasizing greed,

Since all you're gonna get, no matter what, is chicken feed.
