Thai Democracy

The voice of the people, the louder it roars,

The more the Thai parliament primly ignores.

But when a stern General or sleek tycoon

Wants something done they will certainly swoon.

And bend over backwards to get that thing done;

For money is power, and so is a gun.

In Thailand democracy struggles at times

To rise above bickering, bribery, crimes –

They're not alone in this contest of wills;

America, too, has got plenty of ills,

And so does Great Britain, New Zealand, and France –

Democracy means you are taking a chance.

A gamble that people will want what is right,

And get it though they have to put up a fight.

I think the Thai nation will come out okay –

When tinhorn dictators their game overplay.
