Coming Home

An empty room inside a house is pretty rare today;

Children, pets, and Uncle John could use that place to stay.

How many generations can a house hold till it cracks?

How many people does it take to cause some heart attacks?

You should be self-supporting – that is bred into our bones;

But what to do when ev'ry bank recalls their mortgage loans?

And ev'ry job you've ever had dries up like grandpa's prunes,

And all that talk of opportunity now lies in ruins?

We ought to build more flop houses and poor farms, seems to me,

To spare our flesh & bone such 'coming home' indignity.
